On 1 March 2012, Henkjan Honing will be appointed professor of Cognitive and Computational Musicology at both the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam.

University of Amsterdam (UvA) professors Louise Fresco, Henkjan Honing and Eveline Crone have been invited to speak at this year’s TEDxAmsterdam, a local edition of the American TED conferences. This one-day event has been held in Amsterdam since 2009. The theme of the third edition on Friday, 25 November 2011 is Human Nature. The presentations will be live-streamed at Science Park and several other locations.

Maandag 21 november 2011 zal in de Aula van de Universiteit van Amsterdam de Urecht lezing gegeven worden door prof. dr René Kahn.

Wat is goed en wat is slecht voor het brein? De categorie "niet goed" is welbekend; zo vertroebelen stress en overmatig alcoholgebruik de geest. Maar wat kun je wel doen om je brein te stimuleren? Wist u bijvoorbeeld dat het rechtergedeelte van de hersenen groeit als gevolg van de linkerpink die gebruikt wordt tijdens het bespelen van een viool? En dat pianospelen zowel de emotionele intelligentie als het rauwe IQ bevordert?

Na de lezing vindt er een paneldiscussie plaats, onder leiding van prof. dr. Frank Miedema (decaan Geneeskunde). In het panel zullen prof. dr. Frans Verstraten (hoogleraar Psychologische Functieleer), prof. dr. Marian Joëls (hoogleraar Neurobiologie) en prof. dr. Henkjan Honing (KNAW-Muller stoel in Music Cognition) plaats nemen.

Op initiatief van de Freek & Hella de Jonge stichting en het Cognitive Science Center Amsterdam (CSCA) is de Creatieve Geest Prijs opgericht. Deze prijs wordt toegekend aan een jonge wetenschapper die met een origineel en sprankelend idee komt om eigen onderzoek uit te voeren, waarin creativiteit en de werking van de hersenen centraal staan. De prijswinnaar krijgt de kans om in het kader van het UvA Brain & Cognition programma haar/zijn onderzoeksplan te realiseren en zich zo als veelbelovend onderzoeker te profileren.
